Fake-It Stromboli
Here is an easy, quick dinner to get you out of the post-holiday-cookie-frenzy. My husband loves a good Stromboli and this version is easy. Think of it as a large, toasted, doughy sandwich roll of yummmm. stromboli - a type of turnover filled with various cheese, italian metas, and vegetables cooked in Italian bread dough.
Meatball
Stroganoff
I made mine with salami/havarti and ham/cheddar |
2 loaves of refrigerated French
loaf dough (I use Pillsbury)*
6 to 8 slices of each ham, salami,
or turkey
6 to 8 slices of Havarti,
American, or cheddar cheese
8 oz. grated mozzarella cheese
mayonnaise
yellow mustard
salt and pepper to taste
dried Italian seasoning
¼ cup melted butter
1 egg
Preheat
over to 350 degrees. Open
two bread containers* and roll out onto a cutting board into ½” thickness.
*you can use almost any kind of refrigerated prepared dough (such as Pillsbury) like pizza crust, french loaf, etc. Cook on parchment paper to avoid juices running onto the cookie sheet. |
Layer
sliced cheese along bread lengthwise in the middle of the dough. Repeat and top
with sliced meat.
Drizzle with a light layer of mayonnaise and mustard.
Sprinkle dried Italian seasoning along the top and season with salt and pepper
on top.
Pinching
the sides of the dough on either side of the layered ingredients, pull bread to
the center and fold on top of each other to pinch together. Repeat along the
length of the bread until all ingredients are covered up inside the bread. Stromboli
will be long and narrow. Cut about two to three slits in the top of the
sandwich to let steam escape during cooking. Place
two long Stromboli sandwiches onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
Melt
¼ cup butter and brush or lightly spoon on top of bread. Take one egg and crack
into a small bowl. Add a teaspoon of water and whisk lightly with a fork to
create an egg wash. Brush egg wash on top of
butter layer.
Place in oven at 350 degrees and bake for 25 to 30 minutes
until top of bread is golden brown. Remove from oven and let rest on cookie
sheet for 5 minutes. Cut and serve by itself or with warmed pizza sauce on the side.
